MyMiniFactory’s Approach to Creator Support and Big Brands

A New Way to Handle IP in 3D Printing

For years, MyMiniFactory has championed creators, focusing on fair compensation and community engagement rather than chasing pure profit. In an exclusive chat, Horneff shared his take on what this moment means for the platform and the 3D-printing world.

Horneff brings 34 years of experience from the gaming world, including work with big-name IPs like Marvel and Disney. “3D printing will add value to how toys and other merchandise are distributed in the future,” he explained. “This could create interesting challenges for major IP holders, but also vast opportunities.” By sidestepping traditional supply chains, 3D printing offers a whole new way to sell and enjoy licensed products. The release of these DC Universe 3D-printable files is just the beginning of this journey.

Supporting Creators While Welcoming Big Brands

The launch of DC content highlights MyMiniFactory’s core values: a marketplace that prioritizes creators. Unlike many other digital platforms, MyMiniFactory gives creators 90% of the revenue.

“We’re not trying to push small creators aside for the sake of big brands,” Horneff emphasized. Instead, the goal is to build a space where both independent creators and large IP holders can thrive. “Alex Ziff [MyMiniFactory’s CEO] often talks about the ‘fly and the elephant’—can these two exist together? I believe they can.”

Horneff is determined to keep independent creators at the heart of MyMiniFactory’s business model, even as the company partners with bigger names. Drawing from his background in gaming and kids’ entertainment, he knows how small creators can find success alongside giants like Marvel and Disney. MyMiniFactory aims to create a marketplace where both indie artists and well-known brands can shine—and where big IP holders see the value of working with individual creators.

Redefining Merchandise with 3D Printing

The partnership with Knight Models is exciting because it shows how 3D printing could change the way licensed products are made and sold. Unlike traditional manufacturing, which involves costly molds and large production runs, 3D printing allows for on-demand production without creating excess waste.

“Instead of producing thousands of figures and risking leftover stock, IP holders can design a figure on Monday and have it in customers’ hands by Friday,” Horneff explained. This approach not only cuts costs but also prevents unsold inventory from piling up when trends shift.

Launching on MyMiniFactory’s FronTiers platform in October 2024, the DC collection will feature 125 detailed, downloadable STL files. Fans will be able to print their favorite DC characters at home, giving them a more personal and interactive experience with the franchises they love.

Expanding the Reach of 3D Printing

The DC partnership is just one step in MyMiniFactory’s larger plan. Horneff hinted at exciting developments that aim to make 3D printing more accessible to everyday consumers—not just hobbyists. “We’re working to lower the barrier to entry so 3D printing can grow beyond enthusiasts,” he shared. “This will open up more opportunities for bigger IPs to join in.”

Alongside their commitment to inclusivity and creative freedom, MyMiniFactory is also looking into ways to streamline the production process for toy companies and IP holders. By offering a flexible, responsive manufacturing model, they’re reimagining how the toy industry can produce goods. Horneff also hinted at future tools to securely stream and protect digital assets, ensuring that licensed files are only used as intended.

A Bright Future for 3D-Printed Content

As the 3D printing industry continues to grow, MyMiniFactory is positioning itself as a leader in connecting creators, consumers, and IP holders. The collaboration with Knight Models and Warner Bros.’ DC Studios is just the beginning, with more big-name partnerships expected to follow.

For now, DC fans can look forward to printing their favorite superheroes and villains at home, thanks to this groundbreaking partnership. With a focus on inclusivity, creator empowerment, and sustainability, MyMiniFactory is setting the stage for the future of 3D-printed content—and they’re only just getting started.
